There are basically 2 types of cruising on a ship. One is on an Ocean liner, the other is on a River boat.

There are some differences in these 2 types. For example, you might find that Ocean Liners typically have hundreds, if not thousands of passengers on one sailing. This can make for a noisier, hustle-and-bustle atmosphere on some sailings which some people enjoy, similar to enjoying the night life in Las Vegas. River cruises are generally more serene, less crowded by holding less than a hundred people on one boat. These relaxed sailings allow time to really get to know the history of a place.
